‘The desire to lose yourself in worlds often based on artifice or pretence competes with the need to return to your own (fabricated) self’ Roland Barthes: Camera Lucida
Bea Denton’s installations tell a story about hope born of the fragile human condition, and our consequent pursuit of faith, however illusive. We live in a society whose newfound religion is self-worship and whose headline news is a celebration of public suffering and testimony. But despite this spiritual poverty it seems that we have a need for hope that is as great as our need to tell stories.
Six private confessions etched into slabs of glass, laid on a stark row of lecterns.
A row of pleading, tormented faces, eyes raised to Heaven adorn heavy granite memorials. Hundreds of petitions hung in rows by tiny clips on a wall of prayer. Overheard voices, the whisperings of miracles, and a suggestion of something not quite seen, not quite heard.

The stories are of Confession, The Afterlife, Miracles and Belief. The testimonies of individuals gathered online, by post and by word of mouth are transcribed but not altered. Truth is not the issue - these are stories simply told which express recognition of something intangible in the way of things. They are told as they were received, and a curious bond is created between the storyteller and the listener.
On earth as it is… does not claim to give ready any answers, but merely offers a glimmer of hope in an imperfect world
